Daniel Keating Norris Discovery Rooms
Daniel Keating Norris Discovery Rooms These rooms house the majority of the center’s live animals used in programs. Many reptiles and amphibians are exhibited along with identification cards. A variety of native and exotic snakes, lizards, turtles, and frogs are on display. Visitors usually hear this room before they see it, due to our very vocal Umbrella Cockatoo. Another favorite, but much quieter, is a young American Alligator on display.
Besides the live animal exhibits, the Discovery Room also has a large collection of taxidermied mounts and skulls. A life size replica of the giant sloth greets people outside the entrance to this room. Despite its enormous size and fiercely curved claws, the giant sloth was a harmless herbivore. This ancient beast roamed the southern portions of North America from 2 million years ago to about 10,000 years ago, when it disappeared.
