Laser Days of Summer FAQs

Are laser light shows “science”?
Yes! A LASER (Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation) does not exist in nature and has to be artificially created. A laser is usually made up of a tube – filled with gas, crystal, or liquid – with mirrors at both ends. A source of energy will add energy to the material in the tube, and the material produces light. The light will then bounce back and forth between the mirrors, which will cause the material in the tube to produce more light. Some of the light will escape through one of the tube’s mirrors, causing a laser beam or laser light.
While you are rocking out to your favorite bands in our planetarium, remember that this is all possible because of science!
Why is it recommended to limit the age of participants (for example, “not recommended for children under 8)?
The laser light show environment is similar to a concert. The lights are low and the sound is up! That, along with the lasers and water-based fog we pump into the planetarium, can make the environment a little over-stimulating. That is why we recommend the shows be attended by older kiddos; however, you know your child better than we do and we will not turn them away!
Why can I not enter the show once it has already started?
Laser lights CAN be dangerous to the eyes! While we keep the laser beams above eye level, it can still be unsafe to enter once the show starts. The room is loud, dark, and foggy, and it becomes dangerous to move around.
I’ve already seen a specific show. Should I come back to watch it again?
It is not a bad idea to come back again! Throughout the year the lasers are updated, and occasionally songs will be added or deleted to the playlist. It is very possible that the show you saw last year will be different from the show you see this year!
This sounds awesome! What shows will you feature, and where can I purchase tickets?
This year we have a rocking (pun intended) lineup! We are bringing back fan favorites such as Pink Floyd, Queen, Stranger Things, and the Beatles. We will also feature some new shows, which include Elton John, Jimi Hendrix, Aerosmith, and (calling all Swifties!) the iconic Taylor Swift!
